Introducing the Walking on Wyre tutors

Meet our Walking on Wyre workshop tutors

Sarah Hymas is a poet and collaborator. Her writing has appeared in print, multimedia exhibits, dance videos, lyrics, pyrotechnical installations, on stage and as an improvised opera. She has performed with a musician, singer and other writers. Host, her poetry collection, is published by Waterloo Press (2010). Her artist’s booklet Lune (2013) was runner-up in the Sabotage Awards and featured in The Guardian Books Blog as an excellent example of the form. Her next collection Speaking Salt Truth is underway. She is a Hawthornden Fellow. www.sarahhymas.net

Rachel McGladdery is a poet living in rural Lancashire with her 4 children, 2 cats, one dog and a goldfish.  She is published in magazines, online publications and anthologies, most recently, ‘Best of Manchester Poets 3’, ‘Estuary, a confluence of Art and Poetry’ and ‘Sculpted, Poetry of the North West’. Equally at home on the page or the stage, she is a member of North West poets and writes in a variety of styles, from political rants, through confessional and sometimes unsettling performance poems, to  lyrical observation. Rachel was winner of the Liverpool Lennon Performance Poetry prize in 2010.

Norman Hadley is a stanza-wrangler with five poetry collections under his belt, the most recent being “A Silence Black as Milk”. He’s not ashamed to be called a nature poet, noting that all poems are about the nature of things.

Lara Clayton works as a poetry editor for The Missing Slate magazine. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Lancaster University and has performed and taught poetry across the Lancashire region.

Shaun Brookes is a poet, journalist and teacher from Blackpool. He has worked as a football correspondent, newsagent and a call centre battery chicken before opting to turn his hand to teaching- something he now does in workshops and schools across the North West.

Adele Robinson is a Lancaster University graduate living in Thornton Cleveleys.  Published in several anthologies, Adele writes poetry, stories and songs. As current Wyre Poet in Residence, she is keen to help people from the region to become involved with their beautiful countryside in a creative way and is project managing Walking on Wyre. She is a member of Lancashire Dead Good Poets’ Society,  a group of local writers, providing a performance platform and funding for local writers and poets.

Walking On Wyre 2014 - A Community Creative Writing Project

Lancashire Dead Good Poets' Society, in association with Left Coast and Arts Council England proudly presents a Community Creative Writing Project to celebrate The Wyre Way.

The project has been set up to help and encourage people around the Wyre to create poetic tributes to the landscapes, characters and places that give the River Wyre its unique quality. Over a series of workshops, combined with short walks, participants will work with published writers to create poetry and prose in their own style.

Workshops will be run by Lancashire Dead Good Poets, Lara Clayton, Shaun Brookes and Adele Robinson with special guests Rachel McGladdery, Norman Hadley and award winning poet Sarah Hymas. All workshops are free to attend.

All writing produced will appear on the Walking on Wyre blog site during this Summer and pieces selected by workshop poets will be used for a short publication. All participants are invited to attend the launch of this publication at public performance events in Blackpool and Wyre in Autumn 2014.

If you cannot come to one of our workshops you can make a contribution to the project by sharing in a few words, your thoughts about Wyre, on postcards available at venues and Wyre libraries. We will publish these on our blog over the coming months.

Please note - an optional short walk is included during each workshop. Suitable footwear essential.

Disabled access and alternative options for People who cannot do the walk. Mobility scooters available at Wyre Estuary Park by email request two weeks in advance .
